STEM PRE-ACADEMY is driven by the passion, ingenuity and perseverance of Hawai‘i’s educators, university researchers and STEM community partners. Even in this time of great upheaval, it’s inspiring to discover new connections as we work with classroom teachers and subject matter experts to advance STEM for students in creative ways. We are excited to share a few stories that are sure to inspire you, too, and we look forward to hearing your suggestions for future issues.

UH Scientists Study Environmental Impacts on Coral Reefs
Interested in ocean science research and its application in your classroom?
Check out two short videos we produced with Dr. Christopher Sabine, Professor of Oceanography and SOEST Associate Dean for Research. Sabine and his graduate assistant share how researchers at UH Mānoa study the impacts of climate change and ocean acidification on coral reefs. Their work provides incentive for new approaches to preserve marine life in our local waters and beyond.

Two 8th grade science teachers from Washington Middle School provide us with exclusive insights on how they use distance learning to teach science. They share practical tips, and strategies that boost student engagement and help make everyone’s workload efficient and more manageable.

Here’s an inside look at how STEM Pre-Academy is adapting to distance learning needs through live online meetings with teachers across the islands. Read about a recent tag-up with Waiākea Intermediate science teachers and how we used video-conferencing to model virtual demonstrations. We also shared multimedia resources to address their content needs, delivery challenges, and interests.
