Teachers are important vectors for helping students think like entrepreneurs. The greatest payback from working with middle school students over the last three years has been witnessing their enhanced confidence in identifying problems or unaddressed opportunities, and how they address these problems with innovative projects or interventions. A gratifying by-product of this work is the self-assurance and entrepreneurial problem solving skills that students carry over to other fields of study, as well as their demonstrable ability to work on teams in other project-based learning areas.
In this workshop, we will share proven approaches to entrepreneurial thinking that teachers can use to facilitate the work of students to create entrepreneurial value for opportunities they have identified.
We will also share examples of several successful school programs, including highlights from a student-run aquaponics greenhouse business that supplies local restaurants with produce grown by the students using new technologies. You will hear from a student about how technical and entrepreneurial training is preparing them for high school and higher education as well as the ‘real world’ of work.

Dr. Edgar Harrell is a Managing Partner at Harrell Capital Partners LLC, investors in early-stage security, online video, e-commerce, and mobile companies. Dr. Harrell is also on the board of the Pacific American Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Shidler School of Business, as well as Entrepreneur in Residence at Harrisburg University of Science and Technology. Dr. Harrell dedicates a significant amount of time to mentoring and training young people as successful entrepreneurs.
Bob Welsh is a Co-Founder of BrightNow! LLC, a team of educators, musicians and artists dedicated to creating innovative tools for educators and families to help support the social and emotional wellness of young learners. Mr. Welsh is the Founding Director of several non-profit agencies, including the Cultural Enrichment Fund and the WheelHouse, as well as the Founding CEO of Integrated Agriculture Systems, Inc.
Travis Ito is the Founder and Chief Problem Solver of Blue Logic Labs, a digital innovation agency that helps small businesses thrive in the digital world. Travis is a serial entrepreneur and life-long learner, always looking for the next big problem to solve, challenge to tackle, and business to scale.
