And thatâs another school year in the books! Â For STEM Pre-Academy, itâs been a year of advancement, change, and inspiration that couldnât have been possible without the wonderful educators that we have the honor to support.
The next year promises to be one of the most exciting yet, and we look forward to working with our current teachers, teachers we have yet to meet, our fabulous student interns, and our collaborators from all over the country!

2024 Hawaiâi STEM Conference
The 2024 Hawaiâi STEM Conference at the Hawaiâi Convention Center was the place to be on April 4-5, 2024! STEM Pre-Academy and the Hawaiâi Institute of Marine Biology Coral Resilience Lab (CRL) were on hand to introduce teachers to some excellent new science kits.
While many folks are familiar with the CRLâs Coral Bleaching Kit and STEM Pre-Academyâs C-MORE Science Kits, the teachers were excited to learn some new hands-on skills with the CRLâs new Molecular Biology activities and curriculum. CRL Project Manager, Madeleine Sherman and Outreach Associate, Maile Villablanca had teachers using pipettes, 9-volt batteries, and gel plates to get familiar with DIY electrophoresis!
With the valuable feedback gained from conference attendees, CRL hopes to have the Molecular Biology kits available through the CRL and STEM Pre-Academy websites soon! Interested? Let us know!
2024 Earth to Sky Oâahu Climate Change Workshop
On January 26, STEM Pre-Academy spent an educational Friday at the 2024 Earth to Sky Oâahu Climate Change Workshop at the NOAA Inouye Regional Center on Ford Island. The workshop was an excellent opportunity to meet 4th to 8th grade educators from all around Oâahu and share some of the exciting projects that we have been working on, including sensors and devices from the Toolkit for Teachers and the C-MORE Science Kits.

Coral Bleaching Kit at Waimea High SchoolÂ
A big shout out and congratulations to Sofia Saunders, a senior at Waimea High School who utilized the Hawaiâi Institute of Marine Biology Coral Resilience Labâs Coral Bleaching Kit as part of her senior project Hoâike presentation. Sofia also works as a senior intern at the Kauaâi ocean conservation program Hoâomalu Ke Kai. Tim Leichliter, Director of Operations for the program, facilitated the connection between Sofia, the Coral Resilience Lab, and STEM Pre-Academy.
