    Join the University of Hawaii Insect Museum at Patagonia Honolulu for an evening dedicated to the fascinating world of insects! Explore displays featuring common neighborhood insects and learn about the important roles they play in our local ecosystems, as well as the scientists who study them. This family-friendly event will include hands-on activities, interactive games for kids, and exciting prizes throughout the evening. Whether you’re an aspiring entomologist or simply curious about the tiny creatures living all around us, this is a fun opportunity to discover the incredible diversity of insects in our own backyard.

    Sci16 virtual unconference graphic: Science in the Hawaiian IslandsPocketLab Science Is Cool Virtual Unconference

    July 22 – 23, 2026

    STEM Pre-Academy has been collaborating with PocketLab on this year’s ScIC Virtual Unconference!  This year’s event features everything cool happening in science in Hawai‘i! We will have many awesome presenters from UH, NOAA, and the State of Hawai‘i!

    The event is being broadcast via Zoom. You can attend sessions that are of interest to you, and everyone who signs up will have access to all of the recordings afterwards. PD certificates are provided for viewing.

    Confirmed sessions so far include:

    • Astronomy — Inside HawaiÊ»i’s world-class observatories on Maunakea

    • Forestry & Wildlife — Virtual field trips to meet HawaiÊ»i’s rarest snails, plants, and birds

    • Volcanoes — Live eruption monitoring with USGS and HawaiÊ»i Volcanoes National Park

    • Coastal & Marine Science — Ocean literacy and marine ecosystems with UH Sea Grant

    • Intertidal — Rocky shore science and citizen science with UH’s OPIHI program

    • Deep Sea & Fisheries — Exploring what lives in HawaiÊ»i’s deep ocean
    • Wayfinding & Voyaging — Traditional star navigation and the art of celestial wayfinding

    Ready-to-use lesson content inspired by each session will be provided.

    Coral Reef Workshop for Hawaii Teachers banner for August 8, 2026

    Coral Reef Workshop for Hawai‘i Teachers

    Waikiki Aquarium
    Saturday, August 8, 2026
    9:00 am – 3:00 pm

    Join marine scientists from the University of Washington and educators from the Waikīkī Aquarium for an engaging one-day professional development workshop designed for elementary school teachers across Hawai‘i.

    Participants will:

    • Explore live corals and reef organisms up close

    • Build coral polyp models and conduct classroom-ready activities

    • Learn about coral reproduction, reef ecology, and conservation

    • Investigate the effects of climate change on coral reefs

    • Discover engaging ways to teach marine pollution and environmental stewardship

    • Receive lesson plans, educational resources, and take-home materials for immediate classroom use

    Teacher Benefits:

    • Professional development experience led by marine scientists and educators

    • Classroom-ready Coral Reef Education Kit

    • Two copies of Kupe and the Corals for classroom and library use

    • Educational coral specimens and activity supplies

    • Lesson plans, lectures, and resource materials

    • O‘ahu teachers: $100

    Kapi‘olani Community College Summer Camp

    August 10–13, 2026

    Summer Camp is a free, fully online peer-reviewed conference and professional development event hosted by Kapi‘olani Community College. Summer Camp will feature a diverse range of session formats and topics, including instructional, cultural, health and wellness, and more.  Sessions will be held via Zoom meetings and aren’t recorded, so if there’s a can’t-miss session on the schedule for you, be sure to attend!
