An immersive experience in modern astronomy research

TeachAstro is an in-person 1-week workshop for grade 6-12 STEM teachers & education professionals in Hawaiʻi with 3 main components:

  • guided research activities using cutting-edge datasets and tools, taught by world-renowned astronomers at UH’s Institute for Astronomy

  • lessons about modern astronomy, through talks by professional researchers and nighttime observing opportunities

  • creation of in-class curricula using knowledge gained during the week

Why should STEM educators attend TeachAstro?

TeachAstro participants will:

  • develop knowledge about state-of-the-art research & methods in astronomy

  • build relationships with other STEM educators and professional researchers

  • create new curriculum resources that use the latest science & authentic data

What support is provided for participants?

TeachAstro will provide each participant:

  • a $2000 stipend

  • up to $300 for dependent-care support for the week

  • housing in Hilo for Hawaiʻi Island participants with long commutes

  • round-trip airfare & housing for neighbor-island participants

  • up to $300 for astronomy-related activities during the school year

  • an opportunity to earn 3 credits of professional development through UH Mānoa
