Quadrat
This quadrat frame is a simple but powerful field tool for investigating patterns in ecosystems. Constructed as a durable square grid, it allows students to systematically sample an area—counting organisms, estimating coverage, or recording physical features across a defined space.
In middle school STEM classrooms, a quadrat transforms outdoor observation into structured data collection. Students place the frame along a line or at set intervals to measure changes in plant density, species diversity, ground cover, or other environmental features. The visible grid supports quantification: learners can count squares, estimate percentages, and compare findings across different locations.
