Bird Watching Kit

The Bird Watching Kit provides the equipment and identification resources students need to conduct hands-on observations of birds in Hawai‘i. Designed for small-group field investigations, the kit combines multiple pairs of Celestron Outland X 8×42 binoculars, Hawai‘i bird identification guides, a tripod, and a binocular tripod adapter.

Students can use the kit for schoolyard bird surveys, biodiversity investigations, habitat comparisons, behavioral observations, and citizen-science activities. The 8×42 binoculars provide enough magnification for observing birds at a distance while maintaining a relatively wide field of view, making them well suited to beginning birders and field-based classroom activities.

The included Common Birds of Hawai‘i fold-out guides provide quick identification information for birds students are likely to encounter, including common and scientific names, habitat, size, distribution, and species origin. The more detailed Hawaii’s Birds books from the Hawai‘i Audubon Society can be used for further identification and research into native, endemic, introduced, and endangered species.

A tripod and Celestron binocular tripod adapter are also included. These allow compatible binoculars to be positioned at a fixed observation point for extended, hands-free viewing. This can be particularly useful when groups need to observe the same location, make repeated observations, or collect data consistently over time.

Rather than simply identifying birds, teachers can use the kit to turn the schoolyard or a nearby natural area into a field research site. Students can develop questions, establish observation protocols, collect quantitative and qualitative data, identify patterns, and construct explanations based on evidence. Investigations can explore questions such as whether different habitats support different bird communities, how bird activity changes throughout the day, or how native and introduced species are distributed across an area.
