Are you ready to explore the fascinating world of waves and reefs while bringing fun, engaging science lessons to your classroom?
We would like to invite you to our Waves, Reefs, and Resilience Workshop with an amazing team of ocean scientists and engineers: Ning Li, Lucia Hosekova, Troy Heitmann, Kate Feloy, Ally Morris, Lara Noren, and Erik Bendickson! Don’t miss out on this opportunity to make a splash in your teaching!
In this full-day session, you’ll learn from and with ocean experts and other teachers:
- Refresh your understanding of basic wave concepts and ocean waves with a variety of demos
- Learn about the history of ocean wave measurement, from sailors to buoys
- Explore wave energy concepts and use wave tanks to make analog and digital measurements of waves
- Construct a model reef and determine how reefs impact wave energy using a wave tank
- Hear from experts about Hawai‘i’s reefs and coastlines and the impact of global climate change on Hawaii’s sea level and reefs
- Engage with UH researchers and teachers to translate your experience in the workshop into the classroom
This workshop also includes:
- Morning coffee and lunch
- Access to the STEM Pre-Academy lending library, including wave demos and wave tanks
- Activity outlines
